Two Stages, One Powerful Reminder About Joy

Last Thursday was one of those days I will never forget.

In the morning, I had the honor of taking the stage at the TechSHEroes event to deliver my keynote, Joy in Life’s Journey. Sitting in the audience was someone very special to me.

My daughter.

And it also happened to be her 15th birthday.

As I stepped onto the stage, I shared stories about resilience, self worth, and the importance of choosing joy even when life gets hard. My keynote is deeply personal. I talk about moments in my life when things did not go according to plan. Moments when fear, uncertainty, and difficult decisions shaped the path forward.

One of those stories takes people back to when I was sixteen years old. Pregnant. Terrified. Trying to figure out what my future would look like and how I would move forward.

That experience taught me one of the most important lessons of my life. Joy is not something you earn after life gets easier. Joy is something you choose along the way. Standing on that stage and sharing those words felt different that morning because my daughter was there listening.

As a mom, there is something incredibly meaningful about speaking your truth while your child is in the room hearing it.

Then later that afternoon, the roles flipped.

I sat in the audience while my daughter took the stage for her first dance solo of the season.

If you have ever watched your child step into something new, you know the feeling. The mix of nerves and excitement. The quiet hope that they feel confident in who they are and what they are capable of.

She walked onto that stage with confidence, strength, and joy.

I sat in the audience while my daughter took the stage for her first dance solo of the season. In that moment, watching her move with confidence and joy, I saw everything I had spoken about that morning come to life.

And when the awards were announced, she received a Platinum medal and a Judge’s Choice award for her stage presence.

Needless to say, this mama was proud.

But what struck me most about the day was something deeper.

In the morning, I had been speaking about courage, resilience, and choosing joy in life’s journey.

That afternoon, I watched my daughter live it.

Watching her take the stage reminded me why the work I do matters so much to me.

One of my greatest hopes as a mother is that my daughter grows up knowing she can take up space in the world with confidence. That she can lead with her heart. That she can pursue the things that bring her joy, even when the path is uncertain.

And honestly, that hope extends beyond my daughter.

It is the reason I do the work I do through speaking, coaching, and leadership development. I care deeply about the next generation of young women who are stepping into their power and shaping the future in their own way.

They are watching us.

They are learning from how we navigate challenges, how we use our voices, and how we choose to show up in the world.

Moments like last Thursday remind me just how powerful that example can be.

That morning, I took the stage to talk about choosing joy.

Later that day, I watched my daughter step onto a stage and embody it.

And yes, it was a pretty incredible day for both of us to take the stage.
